Italy 2006: Island of Capri
Capri is a beautiful island off the coast of Italy in the Gulf of Naples. It is easily accessible by ferries from Naples and Sorrento. This island is really a big mountain sticking out of the sea with the towns of Capri and Anacapri.

We only spent a day on Capri. We began the day with a boat tour around the island. This is a very relaxing way to see the island. The highlight of the tour is the famous Blue Grotto (Grotto Azzurra). For an additional fee, tourists are taken from their tour boats to tiny row boats that are squeezed through a very small opening in a cave. Once inside, the boat is rowed along the edge of the cave with the most spectacular view of the almost glowing blue water underneath. Following the boat tour, we took the funicular part way up the mountain to the town of Capri. From Capri we took a bus to Anacapri. And from Anacapri we rode a chair lift to the top of Mount Solaro for the most spectacular view of the Capri and the Gulf of Naples.

Capri is definitely a tourist spot, but the scenary is so amazing that it is worth the time to visit. Upon arriving at the island, via Marina Grande, its charm greets you. Fishing boats line the shore and shops eagerly await tourists looking for souvenirs.

The main appeal of Capri is the scenary. Like the Amalfi Coast, the limestone mountain jets out of the gorgeous blue sea and the terrain is very rugged. The island is only about 6 miles in circumference and is entirely mountainous. There are lots of other things to see on Capri so it might even be worth it to spend a night on the island. If we would have had more time we would have taken one of the many walks around the island or even rented a scooter.

This video shows the Blue Grotto and includes a serenade (I guess that's how they justify the extra fee).

The islands of Procida and Ischia are also easily accessible from Naples and Sorrento.
