Italy 2006: Pompeii
Pompeii sits on a plateau of Vesuvian lava overlooking the Sarno river valley. The origins of the city are uncertain but the oldest reports date from the end of the 7th and the first half of the 6th centuries B.C. The eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D. buried the city with ash and rock which actually preserved the city. Pompeii, however, had already been greatly damaged by an earthquake in 62 A.D.

The lost city of Pompeii remained under volcanic rock and ash for over 1,500 years. Around 1600 studies of ancient texts revealed its existence and excavation began in 1748. The excavation of Pompeii is an ongoing effort. The archeological area of Pompeii extends for approximately 66 hectares, of which about 45 hectares have been excavated.

Pompeii was considered a large city for the time. It was also more cosmopolitan than Rome. Pompeii was a center for trade in crops, wine, and olive oil.
