Florence Hotel Review
Hotel Adriatico  My rating for this hotel out of 5 possible stars. Although this hotel is conveniently located to the train station, it is awful! The room was full of smoke and the only ventilation was a window open to the busy street one level below. It seemed like the room was recently remodeled but the shower head was full of mold. We would never stay here again. (€120)
Italy 2006: Venice
We arrived in Venice by train from Florence in the late afternoon and left early the following morning. Just like when I was in Venice in May 2002, my time spent here was very short. We rode the vaporetto (water bus) to Lido and around the main group of islands, enjoyed a seafood dinner near the Rialto Bridge, and tried our luck at the Casinò di Venezia.

Leave it to Joe to spot a casino! While we were on a vaporetto at night on the Grand Canal Joe told me that he saw a slot machine in a window. Not aware there is a casino in Venice I told him he could not have seen a slot machine. Sure enough, he saw a slot machine! Not getting a chance to go into the casino in Monaco a few years ago, I was actually a bit eager to see it.

We had to register to enter the casino and were photographed. Then Joe had to borrow a sports coat before we could enter. Upon entering though, it was like no casino I have ever been in before! There is an air of sophistication and grandeur. And although the main room has few people in it, it does not feel empty. Joe ended up losing €40 right away and I won €15.

There are an estimated 100,000 pigeons in Venice and many of them seem to live in Piazza San Marco. Apparently it is against the law in Venice to feed pigeons in any area except the tourist areas around Piazza San Marco.

Many of the shops in Venice sell masks for Carnival, or Carnevale. This is a celebration, or party, for eight days before Lent each winter.
