On February 28, 2000, my boyfriend, Joe, and I met up with my sister, Tammy and her boyfriend, Arian, at the Detroit International Airport for our first transAtlantic flight (overnight). We were bound for Gatwick International Airport, 28 miles outside London, England! Tammy and I had researched and planned what to see and do in London for weeks!
Around 8:00 AM our plane broke through the clouds and we had our first image of England's gorgeous, green rolling countrysides. After one unsuccessful attempt at landing the plane, our plane finally landed in Great Britian.

After having taken the Gatwick Express from the Airport to Victoria's Station, we were in the heart of London. We quickly learned that the best way to get around London is by utilizing "the Tube". This is London's fabulous underground subway system. We had actually obtained vouchers for 7-day Tube passes while planning our trip. The entire city is accessible by getting on the right train and then possibly making a transfer. On the left is the tube map that we never left our hotel without having in hand. "MIND THE GAP" was the phrase we heard everytime the doors of the train opened. |
| After taking a short nap and getting cleaned up in our hotel, The Swallow International, we were back out to explore London in the drizzle and cold -- it was March 1st! We decided to spend the afternoon just looking around to see what London was all about.

We took "the Tube" from our hotel to Piccadilly Circus station. It was just like being in the United States with a Burger King and a McDonald's right around the corner! From Piccadilly Circus, we decided to just walk around London. The important thing to remember when walking around London is that the traffic travels the opposite way from what it does in the United States! Look right, then left when crossing streets. |

We ended up in the famed Trafalgar Square (above photos). On this day, as on probably every day, the pigeons were in abundance in Trafalgar Square. When we looked to the North (above left photo), we saw the National Gallery. When we looked South, down Whitehall Street beyond the base of Nelson's Column, we saw Big Ben (above right photo).
After we walked towards Big Ben, we eventually came up on London's newest attraction, British Airways - The Eye On London. This attraction actually opened on this day! Each pod holds 25 people for one trip around the wheel at £15 per person. Once we figured out the currency exchange rate (about $22.50 per person) we decided to skip this attraction. |
