London Holiday London 2000: Day 4
Tower Bridge behind Amy Tower of London
Our next full day in London was spent sightseeing. We began the morning with the Tower of London, the structure that guarded London Bridge. This is an interesting place for many reasons. The first being that this is where the Crown Jewels are housed. In a dark, vaulted room tourists are quickly guided through the one-way path along the cabinets that hold the percious stones. Another interesting thing about the Tower of London is that this place has served as a prison and many famous deaths have taken place here. Anne Bowleyn, one of the wives of Henry VIII was decapitated for not producing a male heir. Anne Boleyn is the mother of Queen Elizabeth I.
Beefeater Established in 1485 as bodyguards for King Henry VIII, the Yeoman Warders (also called Beefeaters) are still guarding the Tower of London. For a virtual tour of The Tower of London, Click here! Their uniforms, still worn for state occasions, date back to 1552! Tower Bridge
English-style justice After leaving The Tower of London, Joe and I crossed Tower Bridge and walked along Tooley Street toward London Bridge. We were headed for The London Dungeon, the world's first medieval fully interactive horror museum. We were lead through a recreation of some of London's worst evils. This included the 'Great Fire of London', Judgement Day for traitors, and Jack The Ripper.

Dickensian Curiosity Shop We also took advantage of the London Walks. Highly knowledgeable guides take tourists through alleys and side streets relating the history of those areas to the specific walk. On this day, Joe and I took the Charles Dickens's London Walk lead by Jean who dresses in period clothing. Jean recreated scenes from Dickens' novels for us as she showed us the London that Charles Dickens saw while he wrote his stories.

Madame Tussaud's, the famous wax museum, attracts hundreds of visitors each day. Joe and I stopped by here for a quick visit. The time spent in line is longer than the time spent inside! There are some great wax creations to see once inside, though. From Pope John Paul II to The Beatles, they have something for everyone.
