Montana 2004: Glacier National Park
Perhaps the most remarkable accomplishment in the history of Glacier National Park was the construction of the Going-to-the-Sun Road. One of the most scenic roads in North America, the Going-to-the-Sun Road is considered an engineering feat and is a National Historic Landmark. The final section of the road, over Logan Pass, was completed in 1932, forever changing the way visitors would experience Glacier National Park. Future visitors would drive over sections of the park that previously had taken days of horseback riding to see.

Traveling along Going-to-the-Sun Road (a 52-mile road through the park) we climbed mountains, finding this covered passage through the mountain. There are noticeable changes in the weather depending on whether you are at the top of a peak or in a valley.

The images below show more of the mountain peaks and valleys in Glacier National Park. Some of the pictures really capture the contrast between green trees (healthy) and brown trees (burned in 2003).

The last picture shows Mt. Reynolds in the background. This is an examply of a glacial horn. Horns result when glaciers carve three or more sides of a mountain, often honing it to a pyramid-shaped peak.

For an amateur photographer with a cheap digital camera on a one day trip through Glacier National Park, I think I came home with some beautiful shots. For some extremely impressive shots of Glacier National Park, taken at different times of the day and year, click here.

I have attempted to identify some of the mountain peaks, but I have to admit that I was so lost in the beauty of Glacier National Park that I did not pay attention to the map as we drove along Going-to-the-Sun Road. The majestic nature and beauty of the Rocky Mountains in Glacier National Park is astounding.
