Montana 2004: Flathead Lake
In June 2004 we decided to drive across the Midwestern states to Flathead Lake in Polson, MT. Through Arian's employer we had inexpensive, exclusive accommodations at Lee Lodge located on Flathead Lake. It was a relaxing vacation full of beautiful scenary, some trout fishing and a bit of evening gambling at the casinos in Polson.

Flathead Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi. At 28 miles long and up to 15 miles wide, Flathead Lake's sparkling waters and miles of tree-lined shore offer unlimited recreational opportunities and wildlife habitat.

While at Flathead Lake we stayed at a private resort, Lee Lodge. This is a beautiful resort offering modern cabins, recreation and relaxation. In addition to the golfing, tennis, and swimming, Lee Lodge has paddle boats, canoes and a fishing boat. There was even a playground for Amanda.

We spent almost one week at Lee Lodge which was hardly enough time for all that the area offers to do.

Lee Lodge is conveniently located on the southern side of Flathead Lake. From Lee Lodge we were able to go whitewater rafting with Flathead Raft Co. also located in Polson and we were able to easily drive to spend a day at Glacier National Park when we were not enjoying other recreation on Flathead Lake.

One of the interesting things about Polson in June is the weather. We quickly learned that the sun does not set until around 10PM and the warm part of the day is not until late afternoon into early evening. The average high in June is 81° and the average low is 54° with just over 2 in. of rain.

Although it did not end up fitting into our schedule, one thing we would have really liked to have done was a boat cruise of Flathead Lake. The KwaTaqNuk Resort offers a couple different tours of this large lake on the KwaTaqNuk Princess boat, including a trip to Wild Horse Island. The largest island in Flathead Lake, Wild Horse has been a landmark rich with history since the Salish-Kootenai Indians were reported to have used it to pasture horses to keep them from being stolen by other tribes.
