| Montana 2004: South Dakota |
| There are approximately 400 miles in between the east and west borders of South Dakota, but there are at least as many billboards pointing out things to do! (Often, however, you will see the same sign over and over again which adds to the excitement!) While driving through South Dakota we stopped at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, a ghost town in Okaton, the Original 1880 Town near Murdo, and the Black Hills region. |

Probably the best known attraction is South Dakota is Mt. Rushmore. Four American Presidents (George Washington, Theodore Roosevelt, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln) are represented as 60-foot high faces, 500 feet up, looking out over a setting of pine, spruce, birch, and aspen. The project began in 1927 and took 14 years to complete.
The Corn Palace in Mitchell is an annually changing work of art. Each year new corncobs are used to create the interior and exterior of the buildings design. The Corn Palace actual functions as an convention center, arena for local athletic events, and a gift shop during the tourist season. |

The popularity of Wall Drug is the marketing genius of Ted Hustead to lure business to his deserted drug store. Little did we realize Wall Drug is just that, a (tourist) store.
Crazy Horse is a work in progress by a non-profit organization which explains the expensive entrance fee ($24/carload) and bus ride fee ($3/per person). The original sculptor, Korczak Ziolkowski, died in 1982. When finished, Crazy Horse will stand 641 feet long and 563 feet high.
Reptile Gardens in Black Hills, South Dakota, features the World's Largest Reptile Collection living among rare and beautiful minerals, fossils, and sculptures. Reptile Gardens also has an impressive collection of the world's deadliest snakes, a giant tortoise habitat, a prairie dog habitat and an alligator show! Amanda was even able to touch a snake! |
