San Francisco 2003: Monterey
We made an unplanned trip to Monterey because Joe found a brochure from Sam's Fishing Fleet about whale watching. Although I was feeling the effects of an illness I carried the entire trip, whale watching is a definite must-do when in the San Francisco area. Our boat took jumped giant waves to take us to where the whales could be spotted. Although our photography skills could not capture what we saw, there were plenty of humpback whales, blue whales and dolphins to be seen on this trip!
In Monterey we found another large population of sea lions. Unlike Pier 39 in San Francisco, the sea lions seem to own Monterey Bay! There were sea lions covering the beach and sea lions on almost every boat docked in the bay! It appeared as if several boat owners tried to keep the sea lions out with "fences" around their boats but the sea lions inevitably made onto most boats. Although the photos don't reveal it, most boats were covered in sea lion 'droppings'. I am not sure of the temperment of a sea lion (they seem quite content to just lie around soaking up the sun), but they sure are cute! To Joe's relief I don't want one as a pet since they are noisy and smell quite nasty!
