San Francisco 2003: Monterey Bay Aquarium
Much to my surprise and delight I figured out how to take photos of the aquariums. This is just a small portion of all the photos I actually took! If Joe hadn't been so impatient I would have probably spent the entire day taking photos at the aquarium.
Joe and I found the Monterey Bay Aquarium to be an amazing place! There is an enormous collection of exhibits and we could not find one place where we wished a bigger tank was available for the inhabitants.

Opened October 20, 1984, the aquarium almost doubled in 1996 with the opening of the Outer Bay Wing, devoted to the open ocean and deep sea. The main feature is the Outer Bay Waters exhibit, the one-million-gallon tank containing tuna, sharks and sea turtles.

The aquarium has an active research program.

Quick Facts:

- The Monterey Bay Aquarium exhibits approximately 550 different species.

- On average, 305 pounds a day - nearly 56 tons a year - of food is needed to feed the animals.

- 2,000 gallons (7,570 liters) of water is pumped per minute, day and night, through more than 100 exhibit tanks.

- The water is from Monterey Bay. Sea water is filtered during the day so that the displays will be clear enough to see into. At night, we pump in raw sea water. It contains food for many animals in the exhibits.

- The Kelp Forest exhibit holds 335,000 gallons of water!

- Exhibit windows range from three to 13 inches thick (eight to 30 centimeters) and made of acrylic.
