San Francisco 2003: Napa Valley
There are two big wine regions in Northern California: Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley. We visited Napa Valley and stayed in Calistoga at the Golden Haven Hot Springs.
Electing for a spa package for one night of our two night stay, we ended up having two different rooms at the resort. Calistoga is known for theraputic mud baths and hot springs which we experienced during our stay. While this was an extremely relaxing experience there were a few surprises. First, the mud and hot springs are rich in sulfur which means the air and water are also rich in sulfur. Even the water in the rooms contains a strong taste of sulfur! Second, all mud bathers share the same mud! Keep in mind that you will fully disrobe before entering the mud. Fortunately, Joe and I were the first mud bathers of our day and the mud was allowed to stew at a steamy temperature from the previous days bathers.

Our short time in Napa Valley only allowed us to visit three vineyards: Domaine Chandon, Sterling Vineyards and V. Sattui. I wanted to visit Domaine Chandon to taste their sparkling wines after reading their history extends back to Moët & Chandon. While a good wine, I guess nothing is as good as the original.

We found the Sterling Vineyard wines to taste great. We found the tasting room at V. Sattui to be exceptional. There was a genuine interest in helping us find wines that we could both enjoy. And there was also a fantastic deli from which we enjoyed bread and cheeses.
