CABLE CARS: The first cable car was introduced to San Francisco on August 2, 1873. Today there are 3 routes in operation and we rode the Powell & Mason line. The open-air cable cars are powered with the assistance of a gripman grabbing and releasing a cable that runs below the tracks. When the cable car on the Powell & Mason line reaches the end it must be turned using a turntable (see photos above). We got on the cable car at the turntable, but there are plenty of other stops along the route to board. A one-way ticket was $3.00.
CROOKEST STREET:Dubbed the crookest street in the world, Lombard Street beginning at Hyde Street, takes a steep twisted descent for one block to Leavens
worth Street. Joe and I first walked up this street on our way back to the Marina Inn, but later came back with our rental car to each drive down it (one-way). Unfortunately, we were in a long line of would-be drivers so the procession moved quite slowly for both of us. |
