San Francisco 2003
Joe and I both enjoying watching baseball. Although we weren't able to catch the Cubs playing the Giants at Pacific Bell Park, we caught the Phillies in town. We also rode an authentic cable car, walked up and drove down the crookest street and listened to (and smelled) the sea lions on Pier 39.
BASEBALL: The excitement of the game came when Barry Bonds hit a 3-run "Splash Hit" into McCovey Cove! It was his 648th home run. After having been walked twice in the game it was exciting to see him hit his 35th homer of the 2003.

SEA LIONS: As we walked down Pier 39 we began to hear a strange honking sound. Much to our surprise we found an entire sea lion habitat at the end. Hundreds of sea lions lay around on docks with the occassional fight breaking out as a new sea lion tries to climb on.

HOTELS: While in San Francisco we stayed at the Sheehan Hotel (Union Square) and the Marina Inn (Marina District).

CABLE CARS: The first cable car was introduced to San Francisco on August 2, 1873. Today there are 3 routes in operation and we rode the Powell & Mason line. The open-air cable cars are powered with the assistance of a gripman grabbing and releasing a cable that runs below the tracks. When the cable car on the Powell & Mason line reaches the end it must be turned using a turntable (see photos above). We got on the cable car at the turntable, but there are plenty of other stops along the route to board. A one-way ticket was $3.00.

CROOKEST STREET:Dubbed the crookest street in the world, Lombard Street beginning at Hyde Street, takes a steep twisted descent for one block to Leavens worth Street. Joe and I first walked up this street on our way back to the Marina Inn, but later came back with our rental car to each drive down it (one-way). Unfortunately, we were in a long line of would-be drivers so the procession moved quite slowly for both of us.
